Family: My wife Amy and I have been married 19 years, and we are proud parents of daughters Lauren, 12, and Sydney, 7. I have a sister, Michelle, in Clinton and a brother, Brian, of Memphis, Tenn. My parents are deceased.
Pets: Not yet.
Hobbies and interests: Running, cycling, and golf.
Occupation: Co-owner with Amy of Anderson Funeral Homes. This includes Main Street Chapel and State Street Chapel in Marshalltown, the Conrad Chapel and Gladbrook Chapel. We purchased those funeral homes from Kelly Vogel in November.
What that means: We have been extremely busy since purchasing the chapels. We are well aware of Vogel's reputation and heritage in Conrad, Gladbrook and Marshalltown. However, it has been important to demonstrate we are one family but serving three communities from four locations. While there has been much to do since purchasing the business, our top priority has, and will continue to be, caring for families in their time of need. I have always endeavored to provide service second to none.
Tenure: I have been a licensed funeral director nine years. Previously, I was in sales. A mortician friend encouraged me to enter the business, and I'm glad I did. I've found it to be my calling.
Best part of job: The trust a family gives me - knowing we will take care of the most important thing to them - their loved one.
If I could change careers, I would: I would not change careers, but if I could change something, I would switch my first career choice of sales to my current profession as funeral director.
Book: "The Last Lecture," by the late authors Randy Pausch and Jeffrey Zaslow. It was given to me by my good friends Mark and Leslie Gannon of Iowa City. I stayed with the Gannons on my way home after interviewing with Kelly Vogel four years ago. Mark, Leslie and I talked awhile about life and then they presented it to me. A great book!
Movie: "Shawshank Redemption," directed by Frank Darabont, and "Top Gun," directed by the late Tony Scott.
Food: Sushi, or anything my wife cooks.
Sports: The University of Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Cubs, and Marshalltown Blast (a girls softball team of which daughter Lauren is a member).
Best part of living here: Our family has lived in the Conrad funeral home four years. However, we thoroughly enjoy the central Iowa region. Since we own funeral homes in neighboring communities, we are pleased all are within easy driving distance. Conrad, Gladbrook and Marshalltown are small enough so one can easily get acquainted, and all offer genuine Iowa hospitality. Amy and I have been welcomed in every community we serve.
Most influential persons: My fifth grade math teacher, Mr. Rycroft, and friends I run and train with at the Marshalltown YMCA-YWCA. My friends helped me reach a personal goal and importantly, they were present when I finished my first marathon in Des Moines last October.
Local involvement: I am a member of the Conrad American Legion, Conrad Presbyterian Church, Marshalltown Young Professionals and Marshalltown Y.
Advice on life: Chase your dreams no matter how big the obstacle.
