I would like to thank everyone that supported the Marshalltown Central Business District's 2012 Adopt-A-Veteran program.
The program was a great success again this year and was able to host a Christmas party on Dec. 9. and provide gifts for 52 residents of the Iowa Veterans Home.
This was the eleventh year for the program which provides gifts for residents of IVH who have little or no family to celebrate the holiday with.
For those unfamiliar with the program, resident's names and gift requests are placed on stars that are hung on trees in Marshalltown Central Business District stores. Customers can pick a star and return the purchased gifts to the store where they selected the star. Many Central Business District merchants also displayed donation containers for monetary donations. The monetary donations are used to host the party and purchase canteen coupon books for the residents that can be used in the IVH Canteen.
I would like to acknowledge the volunteers that donated their time and services to make this year's event a success by first thanking the women at Minuteman Printing who made the stars for the trees and paid for them out of their own pocket. Next, Erin McGregor and her family and staff at McGregor Furniture, Vickie Bogner, Fred Nadler, First Sgt. Todd Eipperle, Morning Glory Bakery, the Christian Motorcycle Association, Garwin Girl Scout Troop 60, Amy Ose and the Marshalltown High School Choir for a very enjoyable performance, the Polk City Post 232 American Legion Riders, the staff of the Iowa Veterans Home especially Kathy Knickerbocker, Tracy Ostrem, and Commandant David Worley, and all of the members of the community that came out to share the holiday with the residents.
Lastly I would like to give special thanks to Gayle Hellberg who coordinated the program for the past 10 years and helped me get through my first year as coordinator.
The Adopt-A-Veteran program can only succeed with support from the community, and as a veteran myself I was proud of the support given to the program and ultimately the residents of the Iowa Veterans Home by our community.
On behalf of the Marshalltown Central Business District, I thank you all.
