GIRLS BASKETBALL: Eighth-ranked Spartans stay atop NICL West

GRUNDY CENTER - Four players scored in double figures for the Class 1A No. 8-ranked Grundy Center girls' basketball team, who remained unbeaten in NICL West Division play with a 71-57 victory over South Tama on Tuesday night.

Sam Meyers led the Spartans (10-2, 8-0) with 24 points and nine rebounds, while Riley Ackerman tallied 16 points and five boards. Katie Lindeman matched her season-high with 14 points and Heather Hook had 10 points and five boards.

Grundy Center jumped out to a 41-23 halftime lead and didn't let South Tama (4-6, 4-4) get within 11 the rest of the way. The Spartans shot 14-of-18 from the free-throw line in the second half to keep STC at bay.

Spartan point guard Jessica Ackerson added three points but contributed six assists and four steals with only one turnover.

Kaleigh Sieck led South Tama with 17 points. Megan Wanatee matched her season high with 10 points, as did Shelby Bradley with 10 points. Jade Rohach also had 10 for the Trojans, who visit East Marshall on Friday.

West Marshall 68, East Marshall 31

STATE CENTER - Rachel Freland and Jenn Davis combined to score 51 points as the West Marshall girls set the stage for Friday's showdown with Grundy Center by beating East Marshall handily, 68-31, in Tuesday's NICL West contest.

Freland scored a season-high 27 points and Davis had a season-best 24 for the Trojans (12-3, 7-1), who host league-leading Grundy Center (10-2, 8-0) Friday.

Davis led the way with seven rebounds, while McKenna Hotopp totaled six points, nine assists, four rebounds and four steals. Whitney Benson had six points and four steals, and Sydney Beals had five points and five steals as the Trojans won their fourth straight.

East Marshall (2-11, 1-7) was led by Katie Roseland's 12 points. Meriel Leavy and Kristen Amendt added six points apiece, and Ashley Allen had five. The Mustangs host South Tama Friday.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck 63, South Hardin 58

REINBECK - Emily Snider scored 19 points and Britney Keller added a season-high 14 as Gladbrook-Reinbeck held off South Hardin, 63-58, in NICL West action.

Taylor Flamme chipped in seven points and nine rebounds, Amber Berendes had seven points, eight boards and four steals, and Hayley Weber also had seven points for G-R (4-7, 3-5). Snider stuffed the stat sheet as well with seven rebounds, five steals and five assists.

Sabrina DeHerrera paced South Hardin (4-8, 3-5) with 13 points, Sarah Boomgarden had 12, and both Claire Damon and Kayla Prosser tallied nine.

AGWSR 52, BCLUW 26

ACKLEY - The Comets got off to a slow start against AGWSR (7-5, 6-2) and suffered their 11th straight loss.

BCLUW (1-11, 0-8) trailed 10-2 after the first quarter and then went into halftime down 24-5.

Olivia Calloway led BCLUW with 13 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Kendall Scurr added five points, two rebounds and two steals before fouling out and Mallory Vawter pulled down five boards.

Colo-NESCO 74, CAL 29

COLO - Madison Eley had 17 points and five assists to lead 1A No. 14 Colo-NESCO to its sixth straight win, a 74-29 rout of CAL in this Iowa Star Conference clash.

Madison Farren added 12 points and seven rebounds, Caitlyn Riese had eight points and 11 boards, and Eley also had seven rebounds for the Royals (12-2, 9-1). Shayla Dean added seven steals, while Makaelyn Neuendorf had a season-high nine points in the team's top scoring output of the winter.

Karter Miller led CAL (1-10, 0-9) with 13 points and A.J. Meier had 11 in the Cadets' sixth straight loss.

North Tama 41, Northeast Hamilton 24

TRAER - Josie Youel scored a game-high 13 points to lead North Tama to a 41-24 victory over Northeast Hamilton in Iowa Star play.

Allison Zobel added 11 points, six steals and six rebounds, Emma Knoop had six points and nine rebounds, Abi Watson also scored six points, and Sam Zobel had five points and seven boards for the Redhawks (4-8, 4-5).

Jenn Willems and Jenn Jeffers had seven points apiece to lead the Trojets (2-9, 1-8).

Dunkerton 52, GMG 37

GARWIN - The Raiders had enough depth to outlast GMG for a 52-37 Iowa Star win.

Alecia Kimball led Dunkerton (6-5, 5-3) with 15 points, Ashley Bedard had 10 and Cassie de Neui added eight. The Raiders led 24-21 at the half and slowly pulled away after intermission.

Olivia Barritt tallied 16 points, seven rebounds and four steals to lead GMG (0-12, 0-9) in defeat. Mikaella Koster matched her season high with nine points and Sara Hinson had eight for the Wolverines.
