UNION - A nationally ranked powerhouse came calling, and BCLUW senior catcher Sarah McCoy answered.
The second-team all-state Comet backstop signed her letter of intent on Tuesday to play softball next spring at Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge. The Tritons ended last season ranked sixth in Division II by the National Junior College Athletic Association, boasting a 54-11 overall record.
McCoy is a two-time All-Area catcher, a two-time all-district selection and a two-time all-NICL West Division second team pick who has played on two state champion squads at BCLUW with her senior season left to go.
McCoy batted 5-for-8 during BCLUW's most recent state championship run in 2010, earning all-tournament team honors. She also scored the Comets' only run in their 1-0 championship game victory over Emmetsburg in 2009.
This past summer, the junior catcher batted .402 with 47 hits, six doubles, two triples, three home runs and 26 RBIs. She also walked 17 times and threw out 12 would-be base stealers from behind the plate.
Her .402 batting average was sixth-best in the NICL West, while her .457 average in conference games was fifth-best.
One of McCoy's shining moments this past season was a walk-off home run to beat Denver during the Comets' BCLUW Memorial Day Classic. BCLUW finished with a 27-12 record before falling to that same Denver squad in the Class 2A regional finals.
McCoy, who played varsity as an eighth-grader, is a career .350 hitter. She has recorded at least 43 hits each of the last three seasons.
