The future of the Marshalltown High School Roundhouse continued to come into focus with the unveiling of the latest design plans by the architect RDG of Des Moines.
The latest tentative design for the renovation and addition project was presented to the Marshalltown School Board Monday. RDG worked with school staff, board members and community members to see what they would like to see for the future of the facility.
One of the challenges for the architects in the design process was to keep the iconic image of the Roundhouse while upgrading the facility and fitting in the more modern additions.
This is one of the latest designs of phase one of the Marshalltown High School Roundhouse project by architect RDG of Des Moines. The Marshalltown School Board was presented with the designs at a Monday meeting.
"It's such a neat building and we tried so hard to be respectful of the architecture that's there," said Joe Benesh of RDG.
School Board President Sherm Welker said he was impressed with the architecture and Marshalltown High School Principal Aiddy Phomvisay was equally as excited.
"We're absolutely thrilled," Phomvisay said of the design. "It honors the history of Marshalltown but also represents the future of Marshalltown High School."
The $9.1 million phase one would include renovation of the current gym, locker room additions, a weight room, new roof and entries, among other features. This phase would be paid by the school district, with a portion financed.
The $3.7 million phase two would include an auxiliary gym and wrestling room. The school district will look for the community to raise funds for this phase.
There is an estimated completion date of phase one of Dec. 1, 2014 with phase two to follow if the funds are secured. Phomvisay seemed pretty encouraged that phase two will be a reality.
"We are absolutely confident on that phase two - it will happen," Phomvisay said.
RDG will next move into a deeper design phase which will include a more detailed blueprint of the project and they will continue to seek feedback from the community and school staff.
