SPORTS SHORTS: Smith’s big night not enough for MHS

The Dowling Catholic freshman boys' basketball team overcame Marshalltown for a 53-36 victory on Tuesday night at Lenihan.

Tony Smith scored two-thirds of the Bobcats' points, netting 24 in the loss. Drake Slifer finished with six points, Trevor Dolezal had four and Reggie Johannes added two.

The Bobcats (8-8) play a CIC Northern Division game Friday at Fort Dodge, with a 6:15 p.m. tip at Phillips Middle School.

Dowling JV girls cut down 'Cats

The Marshalltown junior varsity girls' basketball team got ousted 60-35 by Dowling Catholic on Tuesday night at the Roundhouse.

Kali Banks scored a team-leading nine points for the Bobcats, and Karli McClure added eight. Molly Major and Shelby Brennecke had four points apiece.

MHS (5-12) travels to face Fort Dodge on Friday.

MHS sophomores fall to Maroons

A balanced scoring effort was not enough for the Marshalltown boys' sophomore squad Tuesday.

The Bobcats got nine points from Jordan Smith and four other players put in at least six points, but it was not enough as the Dowling Catholic Maroons beat Marshalltown, 68-39, at Lenihan.

Grant Thimesch, Michael Schrempf and Bradin Chaloupek all scored eight points, while Hunter Riedl scored six for the Bobcats, who dropped to 2-14 following the loss.

The Bobcats head to Fort Dodge on Friday.

UNI quarterback Kollmorgen honored

PHILADELPHIA - Northern Iowa redshirt freshman quarterback Sawyer Kollmorgen was honored by the College Sports Journal by being named to its second annual 2012 College Sports Journal FCS Freshman All-America team.

Kollmorgen finished second in the Missouri Valley Football Conference in total offense, averaging 228.4 yards per game, and second in passing with 222.7 yards per game. The Jenks, Okla., native led the MVFC with 21 touchdown passes and a 141.88 passer efficiency rating.
