ELDORA - The West Marshall boys' basketball team guaranteed itself at least a piece of the NICL West Division championship for the fifth year in a row with Friday's 56-45 victory over South Hardin.
The Trojans (16-4, 13-1) have lost only two conference games (62-2) and have won at least a share of the title in each of their five seasons in the league.
West Marshall got out to a double-digit lead and kept South Hardin (6-13, 4-10) at a distance for the remainder. Christian Vis had a game-high 20 points and six rebounds for the Trojans, while Duncan Ferch had 13 points. Matt Van Metre had a team-leading eight rebounds.
Bryce Zeisneiss led South Hardin with 18 points, while Logan Jeske added eight points and Eric Mulder had seven for the Tigers, who host Hudson today.
Gladbrook-Reinbeck 68, East Marshall 50
REINBECK - Four players scored in double figures and Gladbrook-Reinbeck moved within a win of earning a share of the NICL West title with Friday's 68-50 victory over East Marshall.
Zach Pierce scored 19 points, Camden Kickbush had 16, Jacob Smoldt 15 and Dustin Dinsdale a career-high 11 for the Rebels (13-4, 12-1), who need to defeat South Tama tonight to gain their first conference crown since 2007-08.
Smoldt led G-R with nine rebounds and eight assists.
Mitch Berry made six 3-pointers and scored a season-high 20 points to lead East Marshall (3-15, 3-10), which could not stop the Rebels from pulling away with a 21-8 fourth-quarter advantage.
Josh Wilson added 14 points while Ben Terrones had six points and four boards for the Mustangs, who play Monday at GMG.
AGWSR 61, South Tama 52
ACKLEY - Josh Bagley scored a game-high 22 points, Evan Janssen added 14 and AGWSR rallied back to defeat South Tama, 61-52, in NICL West play.
The Cougars (13-5, 10-4) outscored STC 17-11 in the third quarter to take the lead for good.
Grant Koch scored 17 points to lead South Tama (6-12, 5-8), which shot 5-for-16 at the free-throw line in the loss. Brad Evans added 12 points, Clay Waterbury had eight and Ian Slagle seven for the Trojans.
STC closes out NICL West play with tonight's make-up game at Gladbrook-Reinbeck.
GMG 77, CAL 42
GARWIN - Chad Plaehn shot 4-of-6 from 3-point range to finish with a career-high 22 points, leading GMG to a 77-42 rout of CAL in Iowa Star Conference play.
Luke Petty added 16 points, Brock Fisher had nine points, Blake Warren had eight points and five rebounds, and Bryce Newcomb also scored eight points for the Wolverines (10-8, 9-6).
GMG scored 22 points in the second and third quarters to scamper out to a 63-24 lead.
Ben Fahrmann and Juan Gomez scored 11 points apiece to pace CAL (1-20, 1-15), and Andrew Quinones added eight points.
GMG is back at home Monday with a non-conference contest against East Marshall.
