Kenneth Dean Oleson died from a heart attack at his home in Glen Ellen, California on January 4, 2013 after struggling many years with complications from diabetes, he was 63.
Kenneth was born September 16, 1949 in Marshalltown, Iowa and graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1967. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Colorado in Boulder. While in college he met Julie Dunn from Petaluma, CA, and they married in 1973. Ken was a successful Prudential Insurance agent in Marshalltown for several years before entering Drake Law School.
He graduated second out of 500 from Hastings Law School at the University of California in San Francisco. He worked as an attorney for Pacific Gas and Electric, during which one of his projects was the environmental cleanup, which was later dramatized in the movie "Erin Brockovich".
For the past twenty-five years Ken and his family lived in Glen Ellen, California in the Sonoma Valley wine region.
Family was very important to Ken. Attending daughter Megan's figure skating competitions the last seven years was a highlight for him. In recent years, Ken, Julie, and Megan travelled to Marshalltown twice a year to visit family and friends. Before his health declined, Ken and Julie travelled a lot; their favorites were Venice, Edinburgh, and the Caribbean to snorkel with turtles.
Ken loved animals and enjoyed their many pets throughout the years. He once rescued a hawk frozen in a ditch during a Marshalltown ice storm, took it home, fed it raw chicken, and released it a few days later. Ken was an avid reader who was especially interested in history, particularly the World War II era. Classic cars were another interest, and he was proud of his restored purple 1949 Chevy pickup.
Ken was preceded in death by his father, Lloyd, of Page, Arizona and his sister, Janice Heiberger-Davis, of Marshalltown.
Ken is survived by his wife, Julie, and daughter, Megan, of Glen Ellen, California; his mother, June Oleson, brother, Keith (Diane), nephews, Steven and Tyler, all of Marshalltown; nephew, Blake, of Iowa City; brother, Gary (Connie), niece, Jennifer Mac Duff, all of Utah; nephew, Brian, of Connecticut; niece, Jodi Reiter, of Washington; aunt and uncle, Miriam and Ellsworth Schuett, of Wisconsin; sister-in-law, Sally Morrison (Larry); nieces, Jenny Samdal and Kim Morrison, all of Washington; nephew, Ethan Morrison, of Oregon; niece, Amber Lewis, of Des Moines; and many grand nieces and nephews.
Funeral service's were held in Sonoma, California and attended by family from Iowa, Utah, Washington, and Oregon.
Interment was at Mountain Cemetery, Sonoma, California.
