HARRIMAN, Tenn. - Piling up 15 runs on 12 hits, the Marshalltown Community College men's baseball team cruised in its season opener with a 15-1 victory in eight innings over Roane State Saturday.
Justen Folger (2-for-4) and Kyle Simpson (2-for-4) each drove in four runs, while William Salas had three hits and three runs to lead the Tigers' offense. MCC (1-0) scored in seven of the eight frames and led 6-0 after a three-run fifth before tacking on three more in the seventh and five in the eighth.
Jake Whaley earned the win tossing five shutout innings, while striking out seven and walking one.
Ty Russell and Eric Kent each brought in two runs, while Russell, Simpson, Salas and Andrew Utterback each slapped a double. Logan Jenkins led Roane State with three hits.
The Tigers head to Overland Park, Kansas for a twinbill against Johnson County CC Feb. 23-24. Saturday's game starts at 1 p.m. and Sunday's first pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
