GRINNELL - Grinnell avoided a letdown against South Tama County on Monday night and beat the Trojans for the third time this season as the Tigers led from the opening tip in a 74-34 win in the Class 3A District 11 semifinals.
South Tama (6-16) trailed 25-5 after the first quarter and Grinnell (18-4) extended the lead to 43-13 at the break.
Jose Fonseca and Ian Slagle each scored seven points to lead the Trojans, who lost to Grinnell 53-37 and 85-50 in the two previous meetings. Grant Koch and Sam Kuhter added five in the loss.
Joe Nowasell had a game-high 17 points for the Tigers, who had 12 different players hit the scoring column. Clayton Scurr added 14, while Eli Dunn and Joe Schmidt both scored eight.
