Local man charged with trying to strangle girlfriend
A Marshalltown man stands accused of dragging a local woman down a flight of stairs, throwing her onto a bed and attempting to strangle her.
Police arrested Lashawn Scates, 27, Monday morning after he allegedly assaulted a woman with whom he is involved, said Capt. Mike Hanken, with the Marshalltown Police Department.
The officer charged Scates with attempted strangulation domestic assault, an aggravated misdemeanor.
Police questioned the victim at the Marshalltown Police Department after being dispatched to the Kum & Go on North Third Avenue following the assault. The victim then sought medical attention at Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center where she was treated and released, Hanken said.
The officer found Scates at the house on the 700 block of North Fifth Avenue where the attack allegedly occurred and brought him in for questioning. He was subsequently charged.
According to the police report, Scates admitted spending the night with the victim but denied the assault.

On Tuesday, Jasen William Burton, 311 1/2 S. 3rd St. Apt. #3, was arrested for public intoxication and tampering with a vehicle.
On Tuesday, Jason William Burton, of Grinnell, was arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia.
On Monday, Lashawn Scates, 9 E. Grant St., was arrested for domestic assault-strangulation.
On Monday, Matthew Anthony Leavy, 1701 Rainbow Dr., was arrested for driving while barred.
On Sunday, Gerald VanNoller, 3202 S. 12th St. Lot #26, was arrested for violation of a no-contact order.
On Tuesday, Ko Soe, 402 N. 2nd St., reported the theft of a Samsung Metro cell phone, personal papers, a camera charger and battery and an HP laptop computer from his residence. Estimated value of loss was $400.
On Tuesday, Danielle Renee Palmer, 1956 Underwood Ave., reported scratch damage to the front hood and driver side door on a 2001 Ford Ranger while parked at 201 N. 2nd Ave. Estimated value of damage was $250.
On Tuesday, Wi Reh, 119 E. State St. Apt. #8, reported hit and run damage to the rear driver side on a 2005 Toyota Highlander while parked in the lot at the residence. Estimated value of damage was $1,000.
On Monday, a pickup driven by Richard Paul Eckerman, of Conrad, was eastbound on East Linn Street in the middle lane when it attempted to move into the far left lane and collided with a car driven by Kristine Marie Fisher, 905 W. Church St., which was traveling beside it in the left lane. No injuries were reported. Eckerman was cited for unsafe lane change. Damage to the Eckerman pickup was estimated at $1,000 while the Fisher car received an estimated $3,000 in damage.
On Sunday, a car driven by Brandy Sue Hanson, 2605 Reclif Dr., was northbound on South Center Street in front of Hy-Vee when it collided with the rear of a vehicle driven by Karen Marie Groves, of Kellogg, which had stopped along with traffic in front of it. No injuries were reported. Hanson was cited for failure to stop in a safe, assured distance. Damage to the Hanson car was estimated at $6,000 while the Groves vehicle received an estimated $5,000 in damage.
On Friday, a car driven by Ko Soe, 304 1/2 S. 2nd Ave., was northbound on North Eighth Avenue when it went through the stop sign at the intersection with East State Street and collided with a vehicle driven by Blanca Imelda Ruano-Cortez, 307 N. 15th Ave., sending it onto the terrace portion of the yard at 802 E. State St. No injuries were reported. Soe was cited for failure to obey a stop sign. Damage to the Soe car was estimated at $3,000 while the Ruano-Cortez vehicle received an estimated $1,000 in damage.
On Feb. 13, a car driven by Kody Clinton Hilderbrand, 1707 S. 5th St., was westbound on Edgeland Drive stopped at the intersection with South Sixth Street when it proceeded forward into the intersection and collided with a minivan driven by Eli Paul Devine, 2503 Reyclif Dr., which was traveling north on Sixth Street. No injuries were reported. Hilderbrand was cited for failure to yield upon left turn. Damage to the Hilderbrand car was estimated at $1,000 while the Devine minivan received an estimated $3,000 in damage.
