Nancy Jean (Byrne) Heller, 58, of Montour, Iowa, passed away on March 15, 2013 in Iowa City, Iowa. A memorial service will be held at the Montour Community Center, 203 South Division Street, Montour, IA, at noon on Friday, March 22. Light lunch will be served.
Nancy was born on February 7, 1955 in St. Paul, Minnesota to Dr. William Byrne and Terese (Wolkerstorfer) Byrne. She grew up in White Bear Lake, Minnesota and attended Hill-Murray School, graduating in 1973. She studied biology at St. Catherine University and the University of Minnesota, where she was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority and met her husband, Luther Heller, at a fraternity mixer. Luther and Nancy were married on October 7, 1978. Nancy worked for many years at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, Iowa and had recently retired. She was a voracious reader and gifted artist who enjoyed crossword puzzles, movies, and spending time with her large extended family. She loved animals of all sorts and was passionate about animal welfare.
She is survived by her husband, Luther, of Montour, her daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Mack Savage, of Iowa City, her mother, Terese Byrne, of White Bear Lake, MN, siblings Marianne Byrne of Coon Rapids, MN, Jim Byrne of White Bear Lake, MN, Suzanne Byrne of Crystal, MN, Dan Byrne of Los Angeles, CA, Tom Byrne of White Bear Lake, MN, and Diane (Jeffrey) Meyer of Maplewood, MN, as well as many aunts, uncles, brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews.
Nancy was preceded in death by her father, William Byrne, father-in-law, Ervin Heller, and mother-in-law, Marion (Snyder) Heller. A memorial fund has been established in Nancy's name with the Humane Society of Tama County, IA.
Donations in her name can also be made to the Cancer Research Institute in New York, NY.
