Mary Kate Gruening is so interested in learning she goes the extra mile to create projects to help her and her classmates grasp the subject matter.

"Mary Kate has always shown her great effort, but she stands out because she continues to challenge herself and her peers," said Lisa Frauenholtz, her fourth grade teacher at Hoglan Elementary School.

Gruening, 9, said she doesn't mind helping others learn in class.

"It helps my learning and their learning at the same time," Gruening said.

Frauenholtz said she is amazed how Gruening is always asking questions to extend her learning even more.

Gruening has an interest to maybe one day be a chemist.

"I've been working with chemistry and it sounds real interesting," Gruening said.
