FAMILY LIFE

Family: My mother at 95, still lives independently in the house in which I grew up. I have one brother, a retired orthodontist, living in Alabama. Kathy and I have been happily married 42 years. We have been blessed with four children, Sarah, John, David and Susan, their spouses and ten grandchildren.

Hobbies and interests: When not entertaining and playing with our grandchildren, my free time is spent bicycling, exercising at the Marshalltown YMCA-YWCA, gardening, fishing, scuba diving and volunteering.

WORK

Occupation: I am a retired obstetrician-gynecologist - having had the privilege to practice in Marshalltown from 1976 until retirement in 2003. I had wonderful partners and colleagues. And numerous, equally wonderful patients.

FAVORITES

Book: "Team of Rivals" by Doris Kearns Goodwin. I was intrigued how arguably our greatest president could work with his rivals to form a team to work together to lead our nation at a time of its greatest danger. This is an accomplishment from which everybody in our country should learn, and a model that we should duplicate today.

Food: My favorite is grilled fresh tuna served at a seaside restaurant on the Caribbean island of Bonaire.

Sports: As a grandfather, my favorite team is any on which one of our grandchildren is playing.

COMMUNITY

Best part of living here: Marshalltown is blessed with numerous talented individuals who volunteer time to make this an even better community in which to live.

Most influential person: While I am influenced daily by my friends and acquaintances, my mother, father and spouse have had the greatest influence in my life.

Local involvement: I have been fortunate to serve on the Imagine 2011 selection committee, the YMCA-YWCA board of directors and several related committees and task forces. I serve on the Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center board of directors and am active in the Iowa Valley Bicycle Club.

Advice: My advice to others was given to me by my father years ago: "never let a day go by that you don't learn or accomplish something." Time is precious and we need to make the most of it.
