COUNCIL BLUFFS - Freshman left-hander Corey Ceponis twirled a three-hitter and the Marshalltown Community College baseball team rebounded from a game-one loss with a 2-1 victory over NJCAA Division I No. 5 Iowa Western in the second game of their ICCAC doubleheader Saturday.
The Tigers collected three of their five hits in game two during a two-run third inning, which proved to be enough backing for MCC's pitcher. Ceponis struck out three, walked one, hit one batter and surrendered only three singles in the victory.
Ceponis got out of an early jam thanks to a double play, and left a runner stranded on base after surrendering Iowa Western's lone run in the sixth. He had four 1-2-3 innings to hand the Reivers (23-7, 1-1) just their second home loss of the season while snapping their eight-game winning streak.
Luke Wichmann led off MCC's two-run third with a double, and Bennett Mann followed with a single. With runners on the corners, Austin Allen plated the game's first run with a hit, and Mann later came around on a passed ball.
Tyler Evans and William Salas both doubled to account for the Tigers' only other hits, and neither of MCC's two errors led to runs for the Reivers.
Marshalltown (9-4, 1-1) managed just one hit of its own in the opening game, a 3-0 loss. Iowa Western's Robert Youngdahl struck out six and walked two, surrendering just a fifth inning leadoff single to Evans.
Youngdahl outdueled MCC's Jake Whaley, who allowed three runs on four hits, two walks and two hit batsmen in the loss. Whaley struck out four.
The two teams met again on Sunday for another league doubleheader.
