A local man faces going armed with intent for allegedly slashing with a sword at a truck occupied by an acquaintance of his ex-fiancee.

Police arrested William Thompson, 36, of Marshalltown, Sunday when an argument with his ex-fiancee escalated to violence, said Capt. Brian Batterson, with the Marshalltown Police Department.

Thompson apparently came to his ex-fiancee's home on the 500 block of May Street to find the man helping her change her locks. When the victim fled into the home, Thompson attempted to punch out window on the door before using his key, Batterson said.

The victim then fled to the truck where Thompson allegedly used a katana to attack the truck with the man inside causing more than $200 of damage to the truck, according to the police report.

Batterson said Thompson then fled the scene but returned when police arrived.

Police arrested Thompson for fourth-degree criminal mischief, a serious misdemeanor, public intoxication, a simple misdemeanor, and going armed with intent, a Class D felony.

Thompson refused a breathalyzer, and the court issued a no-contact order for the protected party during his initial appearance Monday. His bond is set at $5,000. His preliminary hearing is set for April 18.
