Kim Townsend of Ames is shown speaking before a group at Marshalltown’s First United Methodist Church Monday night. Townsend presented an inspirational program on personal challenges dealing with one occurrence of breast cancer and two of brain cancer. She has been in remission five years. Much of the presentation centered around her trip to Nepal in 2012, where Townsend joined other cancer survivors in vigorous hiking to Mount Everest’s base camp. The trip was sponsored by Above + Beyond Cancer. After the hike, Townsend and a fellow teammate returned to Katmandu, Nepal and volunteered two days teaching at a Catholic school for underprivileged before their return to the United States. Townsend is a PhD candidate at Iowa State University in educational leadership and a mother of three.
