Iowa football going with scrimmage

April 25, 2013

IOWA CITY - The Iowa football team will hold its annual spring open practice Saturday at Kinnick Stadium, but things will be a little different than past years.

The University of Iowa football staff announced today that team activities for the expected two-hour session will look less like a practice and more like a controlled scrimmage and will include four 15-minute quarters.

Each of the quarters will be timed similar to a standard NCAA football game, but there will be some slight play and scoring modifications.

There will be no kick or punt returns and points will be awarded to both the offense and defense based on individual situational performance.

Offensively, players can earn points for touchdowns (6), field goals (3), extra points (1), explosive plays (1) and three consecutive first downs (1). An explosive play will be any rush 12 yards or better or any pass play that covers at least 16 yards.

Defensively, players can earn points for touchdowns (7), sudden change (4), turnovers (3), sacks (2), PAT block (1), and three-and-outs (1). A sudden change will take place if the offense starts a series inside the plus-35 and is held to a field goal or less.

The Iowa Football Spring Scrimmage begins at 2:05 and gates will be open at 1 p.m.

There is no admission charge and fans are invited to bring a non-perishable food item to the annual open practice.

The first 5,000 fans to make a canned food donation will receive a souvenir ANF "Farm Strong" poster featuring Casey Wiegmann, who last fall was the first former Hawkeye to be named to the ANF Wall of Honor inside ANF Plaza at Kinnick Stadium. Collection trucks for donations will be located near the Krause Family Plaza, which is just south of Kinnick Stadium.

Iowa opens the 2013 football season Aug. 31, hosting Northern Illinois. The Hawkeyes host Missouri State the following Saturday before traveling to Iowa State on Sept. 14.
