With a lightened workload already on tap, the Marshalltown Community College baseball team made their day even shorter.
Scheduled for one nine-inning affair with NIACC, the Tigers needed just seven frames to take care of business in a 16-6 ICCAC interdivisional rout Friday at Shawn Williams Field.
Leading 7-5 entering the bottom of the sixth, MCC (18-16) broke things open with seven runs before tacking on two homers in the seventh to end the game.
Daryl Blaskovich had a field day at the dish, going 3-of-5 with a homer, triple, three runs scored and 4 RBI. Tyler Evans (2-for-4, HR, 3 runs, 2 RBI) and William Salas (2-for-5, 2 runs, RBI) also had multi-hit outings, while Andrew Utterback drove in three runs and scored three times.
Bennett Mann plated a pair of runs and starting pitcher Luke Wichmann helped his cause by also bringing across two. Wichmann earned the win allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out three in five innings.
The Tigers jumped out to a 4-0 lead with some savvy baserunning and an RBI double from Blaskovich, as well as a run-scoring single by Evans.
The Trojans (19-10) knotted the game with four tallies in the top of the fifth, before Utterback's two-run double highlighted a three-run inning for the Tigers. Wichmann's RBI groundout stretched the lead to 7-4, though NIACC pulled back within two at the start of the sixth.
MCC caught fire in the bottom of the inning as Blaskovich's two-run triple increased the lead to 10-5. Mann capped the seven-run surge with a two-run double as the Trojans committed three errors in the frame.
Blaskovich fittingly ended his big day with a solo shot, before Evans added one of his own for the walk-off.
Drew Verstegen took the loss giving up seven runs on seven hits, while striking out four and walking three. MCC held a 12-11 edge in hits, but didn't commit a single error while the Trojans had three.
Winners in seven of their last 10, the Tigers host Indian Hills in league doubleheaders today at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
