Jason Strand doesn't need any egging on when he gets to school. He knows he's there to learn.

"He's very much a self-directed, self-motivated learner," said his teacher Deborah Friday in second grade at Hoglan Elementary School. "He puts forth 100 percent effort."

It doesn't stop there for Strand as his good behavior in class is also apparent.

"He's just an all-around good kid," Friday said. "His smile and sense of humor is felt throughout the classroom."

Strand said he likes reading and is happy to learn "so you can do it right."

When he's not in school he likes playing basketball and football.
