PLEASANT HILL - The Marshalltown boys' tennis team hasn't finished the regular season, but they're gearing up for the postseason.
The Bobcats made up their trip to Southeast Polk on Monday night, putting the Rams away with an 8-3 victory in the team's last dual before districts. Marshalltown hosts a six-team Class 2A district tournament starting at 9 a.m. Thursday at the MHS tennis courts, and Monday's win served as a strong step toward that.
The Bobcats' top four singles players got victories - the first three in straight sets - and Marshalltown won four of five doubles bouts as well.
No. 1 singles player Ryan Shomo tallied a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Sam Rice, while Kalei Platt (7-6, 6-3) and Blake Gimbel (7-6, 7-5) were two sets and done as well.
Adam Podhajsky needed three sets but got the Bobcats (6-4) on top going into doubles play with his win at No. 4 singles.
Shomo and Platt improved to 2-2 at the top doubles spot with a 6-0, 6-0 win, while Gimbel and Jameson Eberline won convincingly in their third-set tiebreaker, 6-3, 3-6, (10-1).
Tyler Ashby and Kade Vopava picked up a dominant win at No. 5 doubles, 6-0, 6-0, while Ben Anzis and Riley Wirth at No. 5 doubles prevailed in straight sets as well, 6-3, 6-2.
The MHS junior varsity also won, 6-4-1.
Following districts, the Bobcats may qualify for the pre-substate team tournament on Saturday, but the regular-season finale is a May 14 trip to Fort Dodge.
