GMG boys win Iowa Star title; Redhawks girls take third

MESKWAKI SETTLEMENT - Riding five runner-up finishes, the GMG boys track team seized the Iowa Star Conference meet crown with 112 points Monday.

Northeast Hamilton finished eight and half points back for second, while North Tama (90) took third. Colo-NESCO grabbed sixth with 63.5 points, while host Meskwaki (34) was eighth out of 11 squads.

The Wolverines needed just two victories to take home the title as Brock Fisher raced to a win in the 200 clocking 23.40 seconds, while Lucas Catherwood won the shot put with a heave of 41 feet, 1/2 inch.

Taking silver were Devon Schuett in the 400-meter hurdles (1:00.10), Fisher in the high jump (5-10) and Bryce Newcomb in the long jump (19-04.5). GMG also grabbed second in the 4x200 (1:38.2) and 4x400 (3:48.20). Dillon Slingluff, Lansana Mohr, Tyler Krull and Newcomb teamed on the 4x200, while Colin Crumrine, Austin Vaughn, Slingluff and Newcomb joined up in the 4x400.

North Tama won five events as Dalton Hulme contributed on the winning 4x800 (8:41.8), shuttle hurdle relay (1:03.7) and 1600 medley (3:48.5). Omar Martinez, Jacob Watson, Max Morgorean and Hulme comprised the 4x800. Watson, Hulme, Mitchell Boerm and Jacob Wrage teamed up on the shuttle hurdle relay, while Clayton Blocker, Wrage, Boerm and Hulme formed the winning distance medley.

Boerm topped the high jump at a height of six feet, Wrage won the 110 hurdles (16.4) and Martinez claimed the 1,600 (4:51.6).

The Royals received a pair of golds from Tyler Erickson in the 400 hurdles (59.5) and Jake Webb in the discus (126-07). Erickson's 54.2 earned second in the 400.

Wade Brown led the Warriors with a runner-up finish in the shot put (39-06), while Mark Youngbear was third in the 3,200 (11:43.9).

North Tama girls take third

Abi Watson won the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs and Sam Watson claimed gold in the 800 on Monday and all three wins helped lead the North Tama girls track team to a third-place finish at the Iowa Star Conference meet.

The Redhawks finished with 107 points. Colo-NESCO was fifth (84) and GMG sixht (55).

Colo-NESCO got a win from Shayla Dean in the 400, two strong finshes in the shot put and discus.

GMG was led by Caitlin Appelgate's win in the high jump (5-4) as she matched her school record and set the Iowa Star Conference meet mark.

Abi Watson's 1,500 was timed at 5 minutes, 12.8 seconds and she hit the line in 11:28.8 in the 3,000. Sam Watson's winning time in the 800 was 2:31.

The Redhawks also got second-place tallies from Anna Kvidera in the 400 hurdles and long jump as well as second-place finishes in the 4x800 relay with the foursome of Jessi Jacobs, Sam Watson, Alexa Dostal and Abbie Schafer and the distance medley relay with Shannon Stuart, Kvidera, Sam Watson and Abi Watson.

Dean's winning time in the 400 was clocked at 1:01.3. Samantha Riese and Devin Francis went 2-3 in the discus and the shot put. Caitlyn Riese also was second in the high jump behind Appelgate with a jump of 4-10. Samantha Riese's second-place throw in the discus was 96-11 and her silver medal toss in the shot put was marked at 33-5 1/2.

GMG's Sara Hinson grabbed second in the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.76. The shuttle hurdle relay team of Appelgate, Mikaella Koster, Anna Scheidel and Hinson won in the shuttle hurdle relay in a new meet record (1:14.5).
