Randi Proescholdt, 18, a senior at West Marshall High School, has received an Iowa Newspaper Foundation scholarship. She will attend the University of Iowa this fall.

The scholarships go to students who have indicated they are looking into a career in the newspaper industry. Proescholdt said she has an interest in studying English and could take a career path into journalism or editing.

"I like writing and reading," Proescholdt said.

She also recently received another award for writing a short story. She is the daughter of Robin and Kim Proescholdt of rural Marshalltown and is also active in drama.

The selection for the scholarship was made by a committee of INF members who are looking for a wide array of activities by the students.

"The committee bases their decision off of previous involvement, GPA, writing samples and extracurricular actives," said Jana Shepherd, program director of the Iowa Newspaper Foundation.

The INF received 70 applications for the nine scholarships. The scholarships are for one year, though many students reapply for future years.
