Olive A. Strand, age 96, of Grinnell, died on Wednesday, May 7, 2013, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell.
A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m., Monday, May 13, 2013, at the United Methodist Church in Grinnell with the Rev. Rose Blank officiating. Honorary pallbearers are her grandchildren, Shelley Seifert, Mike Lewis, Rob Lewis, Mike Strand, Teri Nott, Matthew Strand and Tanner Strand. Interment will be in Stavanger Friends Cemetery near LeGrand, Iowa.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell.
Memorials may be designated in her name to the Grinnell United Methodist Church and mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Olive was born on October 29, 1916, in rural Marshall County, Iowa near Green Mountain, the daughter of Alfred and Tillie (Tostenson) Keese. She was raised near Green Mountain and Newburg, Iowa respectively, and graduated from Newburg High School with the class of 1934.
She was united in marriage to Glen Duane Strand on March 8, 1937, in Newburg. The couple farmed in Marshall County prior to moving to a farm near Grinnell in 1965. They moved to Grinnell in 1979, and later to Seeland Park in 1996. She was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church and was active with several church committees.
Olive dearly loved her family and enjoyed the times her grandchildren came to visit her. She looked forward to the Sunday family gatherings at her home where she prepared a great meal to enjoy. Her enjoyments included tending to her garden and flowers, sewing, decorating her home, and traveling.
Olive is survived by her daughter, Sharon (Earl) Lewis of Urbandale, Iowa; two sons, Neil Strand of Marshalltown, Iowa and Kurt (Renee) Strand of Grinnell; seven grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; her brother-in-law, Lyle Strand of Pensacola, Florida; and two sisters-in-law, Lorraine Zucker of Grinnell and LaVon Keese of Des Moines, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen D. Strand; her son, Tim Strand; and her brothers, Alfred, Rodney and Omar Keese.
