Poppy Days are fast approaching

May 12, 2013
Delores Popp, Marshalltown , Times-Republican

"Saluting our Flag, Saluting our Veterans" is State Legion Auxiliary President Mary Littrell's theme for this year. As we know, the poppy symbolizes the sacrifices made by our veterans and the flag represents why our veterans made those sacrifices to protect our freedom.

The volunteers from the American Legion, Auxiliary and Sons of the American Legion will be distributing the handcrafted poppies on May 16, 17 and 18 in Marshalltown. Watch for these dedicated volunteers at Hy-Vee, Fareway, WalMart, American Legion Post Home and the Iowa Veterans Home.

A big thank you to the residents of the Iowa Veterans Home who assembled the poppies. Donations received are used entirely for veterans' projects.

Auxiliary members will be decorating a poppy window at the Marshall Town Center. We appreciate their courtesy and help with this project each year.

It is just a little red paper flower, but it has special meaning. Salute our veterans by wearing a memorial poppy.
