Spring films at the library

May 13, 2013
Times-Republican

The third "Afternoon at the Library Movie" will be at 2 p.m. May 20 at the Marshalltown Public Library.

The last film of the spring season is a 1954 musical starring Howard Keel (Adam) and Jane Powell (Milly), as a backwoodsman and his new bride who agree to marry despite knowing each other only for a few short hours. Little does the new bride know, she is acquiring six brothers who are all living in his cabin. Milly sets out to reform the uncouth siblings who are now anxious to finds wives of their own.

Rousing choreography by Michael Kidd makes dance numbers out of such mundane frontier pursuits as chopping wood and raising a barn fun. The film is directed by Stanley Donen with music by Johnny Mercer. This film was a 1954 Oscar nominee for Best Picture.
