Sid Roseland, local businessman and 25-plus year member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, passed away in January 2003. Sid was a calf roper and his passion was helping young kids get a good start in his event as well as steer wrestling.
In October of that same year, the Roseland family held the first "Cowboys in the Sky" Sid Roseland Memorial Calf Roping and Steer Wrestling event in his honor.
This year's rodeo, which takes place Saturday and Sunday at the Central Iowa Fairgrounds in Marshalltown, will mark the 11th anniversary of the memorial event. Cowboys and cowgirls will travel from Missouri, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Alabama and Nebraska as well as from throughout Iowa to participate.
Marshall County Farm Bureau member Charlene Roseland (center) and son Jason presented an engraved Henry rifle to champion calf roper Scotty Sheldon at last year's annual 'Cowboys in the Sky' Sid Roseland Memorial Calf Roping and Steer Wrestling event.
All proceeds are used to provide scholarships for Iowa High School Rodeo seniors. Over the past 10 years, the event has raised $43,000.
Saturday's action will begin at 9 a.m. and include barrel racing, goat tying, high school girls' breakaway roping, high school boys' tie-down calf roping, high school steer wrestling and amateur roping. A barbecue dinner served at 6 p.m. will round out the day. While there is no charge for the open-to-the-public meal or for the two-day event, freewill donations are requested.
Following the 8:30 a.m. Cowboy Church service on Sunday morning with pastor Jennifer Daniels, action in the arena will resume with pro steer wrestling, junior high breakaway calf roping and tie-down calf roping and pro-am calf roping events.
There are no fairground admission or parking fees; concessions will be available both days on the premises. For more information, please contact Charlene Roseland at 641-691-5619 or Jason Roseland at 641-485-7569.
