MOLINE, Ill. - The Wartburg College baseball team battled back to force extra innings but could not overcome fifth-seeded Adrian College, sustaining a 5-4, 12-inning loss to the Bulldogs in the first round of the NCAA Division III Central Region baseball tournament Wednesday at Swanson Stadium.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck High School graduate Scott Benson, a senior pitcher for the second-seeded Wartburg Knights, went 10 innings as the starter but did not factor into the decision.

Benson allowed four runs - two earned - on seven hits. He walked two, hit one and struck out nine. Benson threw 101 of his 149 pitches for strikes, matching his career high with 10 innings.

No. 21 Wartburg trailed most of the game, overcoming a 4-0 deficit with two runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth.

The Knights (34-10) will face sixth seed Ripon (Wis.) College at noon today in an elimination game.
