Local man flees police, gets charged with assaulting an officer

A Marshalltown police officer shocked a local man with a stun gun early Wednesday morning when the man allegedly brandished a metal bar at the officer.

Capt. Mike Hanken, with the Marshalltown Police Department, said Jerome McDowell, 34, Marshalltown, ran from his car on the 400 block of South First Street after an officer pulled him over for a busted taillight. After a short foot chase, McDowell attempted to jump a fence but lost his balance and fell. McDowell then allegedly picked up a metal bar from the fence and squared off with the officer as if to assault him.

The officer subdued McDowell with a stun gun, Hanken said, and he was unharmed.

Police charged McDowell with driving while revoked, a serious misdemeanor; interference with official acts, a simple misdemeanor; and assault on a peace officer, a Class D felony.

One of McDowell's passengers, Jaramie Trumbo, 32, Marshalltown, is also wanted on a warrant for fleeing the scene.
