VINTON - Maci Griffith notched a hat trick and the Vinton-Shellsburg girls' soccer team dispatched South Tama, winning 6-0 in Tuesday's regular-season finale.
Lyndsey Cornell and Chloe Osborn both charted a goal and an assist, Daisy Johnson also scored and Grace Milroy had two assists for the Vikings (3-10). Goalkeeper Chelsea Meier had three saves in net for the Vikings, who scored their season high in goals.
South Tama fell to 0-15 on the season with their 14th shutout loss. Goalkeepers Sam Earley and Hannah Keckler made 10 and five saves, respectively.
The Trojans take to Class 2A Region 6 play on Thursday, playing at 6 p.m. at Independence.
Bobcat freshmen fall twice at Newton
NEWTON - The Marshalltown freshman baseball team came up with only one run in suffering a sweep at the hands of Newton in Monday's season-opening doubleheader.
The host Cardinals won the first game 1-0 and the second game 7-1.
Cody Mead pitched all five innings for MHS in the opener, striking out four and walking one. He gave up one hit and one unearned run.
Joe Rebik had two hits, including a double, and Kyler Ladeoff added a single for the Bobcat bats.
In the nightcap, MHS trailed 7-0 before scoring its only run in the top of the sixth. Luke Severson was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on Jack Greene's subsequent single.
Reggie Johannes had a double, while Dayton Slifer and Mead added singles. Mason Huntley took the loss on the mound.
The Bobcats return to action with their home opener Thursday against Des Moines Hoover.
MHS looking for softball announcer
The Marshalltown High School athletic department is seeking volunteers to serve as public address announcers during the Bobcats' softball games this summer.

Bobcat golf fundraiser set for June 19
The 11th annual MHS Bobcat Athletics Fundraiser golf tournament has been scheduled for June 19 at the American Legion Golf Course.
The Marshalltown High School event has an 8 a.m. and a 12:30 p.m. session. Entry fees are $50 per person for one session or $75 for both sessions, with cost going toward green fees, cart, lunch and prizes. Various levels of hole sponsorship are also available.

Lincoln Valley hosting 4-man best shot
STATE CENTER - The Lincoln Valley Men's Association will host a Miller Lite Men's Stag event on June 4 with a 1 p.m. shotgun start at Lincoln Valley Golf Course.
The four-man best shot open tournament will consist of 18 holes from the yellow tees, teams will play in eight-somes and scores will be flighted for prize purposes.
Cost is $35 per person, which includes dinner, green fees, sponsor gifts, raffle and hole prizes.

G-R grad Benson tabs all-conference
CEDAR RAPIDS - Wartburg College senior pitcher Scott Benson has been named to the all-Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball first team for the second year in a row.
Benson, a Gladbrook-Reinbeck graduate, finished 7-1 with a 3.71 earned run average. He threw three shutouts in his 11 starts, tossing 80 innings with 64 strikeouts and 15 walks. Opposing batters hit .257 against the right-hander.
