TRAER - Jacob Wrage and Cameron Hoeg combined on a no-hitter and the North Tama baseball team improved to 4-0 with a 13-1, five-inning victory over Tripoli in Friday's Iowa Star Conference contest.
Wrage struck out seven over 3 1/3 innings, walking four and allowing one unearned run. Hoeg tossed the final 1 2/3 frames, striking out five.
Wrage also led the Redhawk bats with a 2-for-4 day at the plate that included a double, a triple and three RBIs. Dalton Hulme had an RBI triple, Brent Billerbeck doubled and scored twice, and Brody Hulme was 1-for-2 with two RBIs.
North Tama (4-0, 3-0) returns to action Tuesday with a non-conference doubleheader at Roland-Story starting at 5:30 p.m.
Newton 6, West Marshall 3
NEWTON - The West Marshall baseball team suffered its first loss of the season, a 6-3 setback at the hands of Newton on Friday.
Nolan Sinning finished 2-for-4 at the plate to lead the Trojans (2-1), collecting a double, a run scored and two RBIs. Jared Johnson had the team's only other hit, an RBI single.
Matt Van Metre took the loss on the mound for West Marshall, allowing two runs on two hits and four walks over two innings. He struck out two.
The Trojans travel to Fort Dodge today to play in the St. Edmond Tournament, meeting the host Gaels at noon. Newell-Fonda and Garner-Hayfield meet in the 10 a.m. opener.
Grinnell 5, East Marshall 4
GRINNELL - East Marshall scored three times in the top of the seventh inning, but the Mustang baseball team's comeback fell just short in a 5-4 loss to neighboring Grinnell on Friday night.
Grinnell (2-1) got out to a 4-1 lead after three innings and held off East Marshall from there, tacking on what proved to be a key run in the bottom of the sixth.
East Marshall starter Caleb Benzing took the loss, allowing four runs on nine hits over four innings, walking one and striking out three. Adam Puumala pitched three innings in relief, allowing a run on one hit with one walk and five strikeouts.
Benzing and Josh Wilson both finished 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Sam Benzing was 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Nick Long had a hit and an RBI, while Nate DeBondt singled and scored.
The Mustangs (0-4) are back at it today in the Gilbert Tournament, taking on Ogden at noon.
