STORY CITY - The East Marshall baseball team's grueling schedule to start the season continued with Thursday's doubleheader defeats at Roland-Story.
The Norsemen (6-1) handed the young Mustangs a pair of losses, 8-2 and 5-0. East Marshall had just five hits in the twinbill, falling to 0-6 on the year.
East Marshall collected its only two runs of the day in the third inning of game one, taking a 2-1 lead. Roland-Story responded with seven runs in its ensuing at-bat to bring the score to its eventual final.
Brock Pieters took the loss on the mound for the Mustangs, allowing four walks with one strikeout. Austin Briney, Ryan Puumala and Nick Long each had a hit for East Marshall.
In game two, Sam Benzing went the distance on the mound for East Marshall. He suffered the loss, striking out two and walking none. Sam and Caleb Benzing each had a single.
The Mustangs are slated to play their NICL West Division opener against BCLUW tonight in Beaman. Tuesday's conference home game against South Hardin was postponed, but a make-up date was not immediately announced. Last weekend's Gilbert Tournament was also washed out.
The annual Ethan Hungerford Memorial Tournament on Saturday has been moved from the Marshalltown Community College diamond to Gilman. East Marshall is slated to meet Oskaloosa at 9 a.m., while GMG and Bondurant-Farrar will face off at 11 a.m. The consolation and championship games will follow.
