BALLARD - A five-run fifth inning from the Hawkettes and six errors was too much for the Class 2A No. 11 ranked BCLUW softball team to overcome in a 7-1 loss to Class 5A No. 4 Ankeny in the Ballard Softball Festival Friday.
Makayla Van Cleave hit a bloop single up the middle to score Nicole Montgomery from second for the Comets' lone run. Nicolette Simpson took the loss from the circle giving up 12 hits and seven runs, while striking out one and walking two in five innings.
Kayla Benjamin and Montgomery each went 1-for-2 at the plate, while Kendall Scurr and Van Cleave each hit 1-of-3. The Hawkettes (2-1) didn't commit an error.
The Comets (1-1) face Class 2A No. 8 Woodbury Central today at 8 a.m.
Grandview Park Baptist 4, West Marshall 3
DES MOINES - A slip from the defense was all the Defenders needed to take over.
Pouncing on a one-out Trojan error, Grandview Park Baptist plated three runs in the bottom of the seventh to edge the West Marshall softball team 4-3 at Grandview University Friday.
Georgia Porter batted 1-for-3 and crossed home twice as the Trojans answered an early 1-0 deficit with a single run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Kenadey Porter hit 1-of-3 with a RBI, while McKenna Hotopp (1-for-4) and Morgan Hopper (1-4, R) also contributed.
Rachel Freland struck out six batters and walked three, while giving up a pair of earned runs on nine hits in a complete game effort.
Andrea Vargus drove in a pair of runs for the Defenders (4-1), while Sierra Scarnati plated one.
West Marshall (1-4) hosts Marshalltown today at 9 a.m. to open its home tournament. The Bobcats face Southeast Webster Grand at 12:30 p.m. and the Trojans play Greene County at 2:15 p.m.
