IOWA CITY - Grundy Center grad Adrianne Alexia is one of 57 University of Iowa student-athletes to be named to the 2013 spring Academic All-Big Ten team released Wednesday.
Alexia, a junior this spring, was one of the 13 members recognized from the Hawkeyes women's track and field team.
To be eligible for an Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better.
The Biochemistry major led the Hawkeyes in both the 800 and 1,000 meters during the indoor season. The three-time state champion posted a collegiate-best time of 2 minutes, 8.95 seconds in the 800 at the Big Ten Championships, which ranks fourth all-time at Iowa. Her clocking of 2:54.12 in the 1,000 is also her best performance as a collegian.
Alexia followed her indoor campaign with a runner-up finish in the 800 at the Drake Relays. The former Spartan's time of 2:08.61 ranks fifth in school history at Iowa. She later anchored the Hawkeyes' sprint medley relay (3:54.51), which owns the second-fastest split all-time at Iowa.
A two-time NICL West Division Most Outstanding Woman Athlete, Alexia also ran the third leg on Iowa's sprint medley at the Alabama Relays (3:58.72), setting the school's sixth-best time.
