STATE CENTER - AGWSR sophomore ace Ashley Sicard struck out 10 in a one-hitter - her fourth shutout of the season - and the Class 2A No. 13-ranked Cougar softball team improved to 5-0 with a 4-0 win over West Marshall on Tuesday night.
Sicard surrendered just a second-inning single to Kallie Malloy, who advanced as far as third base. She issued no walks and the Cougar defense made no errors in the NICL West Division victory.
Malloy, an eighth-grader, took the loss in the circle, allowing one run in two innings of work. She struck out two and walked two. Rachel Freland went the final five frames, striking out eight while walking four and hitting another.
The loss was the sixth straight for West Marshall (1-8, 0-2).
AGWSR (5-0, 2-0) collected just four hits, highlighted by Ella Frazier's run-scoring double. Hannah Johnson, Marissa Roberts and Olivia Ingledue each singled for the Cougars, who scored solo runs in the first, fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
The Cougars visit South Tama tonight and Grundy Center Thursday in league play, while West Marshall hosts Van Meter tonight in a non-conference contest. The Trojans go to 3A No. 4 East Marshall on Friday and then play in the Mustangs' tournament on Saturday.
