South Tama's girls' state golf champion Paige Van Dyk and fellow junior Kolton Smith tied for fifth place in Class 1A at the Co-Ed State Golf Tournament Tuesday at Cedar Pointe Golf Course in Boone.
The Trojan duo combined on a nine-hole round of 41 in the alternate-shot format, finshing six strokes off the pace set by champions Malorie Fischels and Dane Waldron of Clear Lake.
South Hardin's entry of seniors Cami Eller and Jack Dunn teamed up to shoot a 52.
In Class 2A competition, Marshalltown's combination of senior Riley Wirth and sophomore Ashley Harris yielded a round of 91 despite a steady downpour to start the day at Bos Landen Golf Club in Pella. The Bobcat pair tied for 16th.
"We played in difficult conditions in a soaking rain for the first seven holes," said MHS golf coach Lucas Johnson. "Bos Landen is a demanding course that puts a premium on hitting the ball straight and keeping it in play.
"Ashley and Riley found their groove with the alternate shot format toward the latter stages of the round and had a strong finish."
Marshalltown's second entry of junior Madison Sogge and freshman Brant McKibben shot a 114.
The 2A champions were Karli Kerrigan and Andrew Huseman of Ankeny, carding a 77.
