FORT DODGE - The BCLUW softball team ran into an unranked buzzsaw in the opening round of the Fort Dodge Tournament on Friday, but the Comets bounced back for a win in the consolation bracket.
Class 2A No. 10 BCLUW fell to an unranked 4A powerhouse in Harlan, losing 8-0. The Cyclones rapped out 15 hits against Olivia Callaway and the Comets could back her with only two hits of offense.
Jessica de Neui and Sarah McCoy both had singles for BCLUW. Callaway struck out seven and did not walk a batter.
On the back side of the bracket, the Comets scored a solo run in the top of the seventh inning to get past Emmetsburg, 6-5. The E-Hawks scored four runs in the bottom of the first but BCLUW got three in the second to tie it.
The Comets went ahead briefly with a run in the fourth, which Emmetsburg answered, and BCLUW's run in the seventh was the deciding tally.
Nicolette Simpson struck out 11 in the win, allowing five hits and one walk. McCoy was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI, leading the Comets' 10-hit attack. Callaway also went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI while also stealing three bases.
Mallory Vawter finished 2-for-3 with a run and a stolen base, while Kayla Benjamin doubled and Makayla Van Cleave added a single. Sara Sharp and de Neui both drove in a run.
The Comets are back in action at the tournament today with an 11 a.m. game against 1A No. 4-ranked Newell-Fonda.
AGWSR 4, Jesup 0
ROLAND - A pair of ranked Class 2A teams collided in the first round of Roland-Story's tournament on Friday, with No. 9 AGWSR taking a 4-0 win from No. 5 Jesup (13-3).
Ashley Sicard tossed a three-hit shutout for the Cougars (12-2), who scored two runs in both the third and fifth innings. Sicard struck out six and walked two.
Ella Frazier was 2-for-2 and walked twice to lead off the AGWSR lineup, and her courtesy runner Morgan Kappel scored twice. Morgan Rose went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Madi Fryslie was 2-for-2 with a triple and a run scored. Kristen Zacharias singled and scored, while Alexa Johnson and Sicard also had singles.
