Teachers in the Marshalltown Community School District can expect to see an increase on their paycheck starting next school year.

A settlement has been reached between the Marshalltown Education Association and the MCSD to raise beginning teacher base pay and the base Bachelor of Arts salary.

The school board voted unanimously on the pay raise at its meeting Monday night.

"Last week the members of the MEA ratified a collective bargaining agreement for the 2013-2014 school year," said Rex Ryden, MCSD attorney. "It was a long, intense negotiation ... this is where it ended up."

The pay raise will take the beginning teacher base salary of $34,962 to $35,745, an increase of $783. The Bachelor of Arts base salary will jump $675 from $30,140 to $30,815, a 2.2 percent increase.

Lisa Koester, MCSD director of human resources and student issues, said she was happy with how things turned out and how well the school district officials worked with the MEA.

"I appreciate the relationship we have with the MEA and their professionalism," she said.

The salary increases will cost the district approximately $786,600 over the next year. That's an increase of 3.59 percent from the 2012-2013 school year.

In other action Monday night, the school board voted unanimously to accept the resignation of Miller Middle School Associate Principal Tom Johnson, effective immediately, and the school board welcomed Anel Garza de Sandoval as the new principal of Woodbury Elementary.

Garza de Sandavol comes from Perry Elementary School in Perry, Iowa, and replaces Sarah Johnson who resigned earlier this year. Her salary will be $83,000 annually.
