DES MOINES - Incoming Drake University volleyball coach Darrin McBroom has rounded out his staff with the hiring of former Creighton University standout Laurel Sanford.
Sanford was a three-year starter at middle blocker for Creighton from 2008-11, leading the Lady Jays in blocks and kills her senior season prior to being named to the all-Missouri Valley Conference first team.
"I'm thrilled to have Laurel join us," said McBroom. "She was an all-conference standout in the middle for Creighton and will be a great coach for our middle blockers. Not only does she have an impressive playing background, but she has knowledge and experience of the other programs in the Valley and in the region. She's an outstanding addition."
Sanford served as an assistant coach for the Marian, Neb., High School volleyball team, which finished as a state runner-up. She also has coached with the Premier Volleyball Club for the last four years and played for Northern Lights, one of the top club teams in the Twin Cities area.
"I'm excited for the opportunity to coach at Drake," said Sanford, an Eagan, Minn., native. "To be able to start my collegiate coaching career in a conference I'm familiar with and with Darrin, who I have known for several years, is great. Coaching is my passion and I can't wait to get started."
Grundy Center High School graduate Sam Meyers, the 2011 Times-Republican All-Area Volleyball Player of the Year, is a Drake volleyball commit.
