DES MOINES - Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa CEO Jamie Boersma is one of 10 in the entire nation to be selected as a 2013 "Characters Unite" Award recipient, given to individuals who have made a difference in their communities.

She was selected out of hundreds of nominees nationwide for her extraordinary efforts in helping give girls the chance to become strong and successful leaders, to stand up against bullying and address important issues like diversity.

"I'm thrilled the important work we, and like-minded individuals and organizations, do is being brought to center stage," Boersma said. "We want to be able to give more girls the opportunity to realize their full potential and reach all of their goals."

As part of receiving the award, Boersma will be honored during a hometown award ceremony and will receive a $5,000 grant from USA Network to support Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa.

Boersma plans to allocate the money to girl programming. As part of the award, she will be featured on air in a PSA, online at charactersunite.com and via a social media promotion campaign.

Boersma is the first member of Girl Scouts to receive the honor.
