STATE CENTER Nolan Sinning tossed a six-inning, one-hitter and the West Marshall baseball team maintained its safe perch atop the North Iowa Cedar West Division with an 8-3 victory over East Marshall Wednesday.
Sinning fanned 10 batters, walked five and gave up his only hit in the first inning as the Trojans (15-3, 11-0) kept the Mustangs at arm's length both in the game and in the conference race. Nick Long had East Marshall's lone hit, an RBI double in the first, as the Mustangs (11-12, 10-3) took a 2-0 lead before West Marshall plated five in their first at-bat. The Trojans added another score in the second and two in the fifth to rack up eight hits, while pouncing on three East Marshall errors.
Sinning helped his cause at the dish hitting 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, while Jared Riemenschneider was also 2-of-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI, while striking out one and walking one in the final frame on the hill.
Austin Briney took the loss allowing six runs in three innings, while fanning three and walking one. East Marshall, which also scored once in the fourth, relied on six walks in the game to aid its offense.
The Mustangs travel to Grundy Center Friday and will face Sumner-Fredericksburg in the BCLUW Tournament Saturday.
The Trojans face BCLUW on the road tonight and host GMG Friday.
