When it comes to HIV/AIDS "pay now or pay later" means paying a cost in lives and money. ("Treat people with HIV early to stop spread" by Maria Cheng, published in the Times-Republican, July 1). The new guidelines from the World Health Organization offer the next step in the AIDS-free generation that President Obama and others say is possible. By increasing financial commitment by 10 percent now, we can save millions of lives and billions of dollars. Fortunately, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria is ready to fund projects to carry out this step by funding projects that work. The Global Fund then follows up with the project to make sure it is delivering the services or funding is withdrawn. It does this with only 3 percent administrative costs. But, of course, it needs to be funded by America and other wealthy countries. Let your representatives know that this matters; we want to save lives and money now.
