Prisoner should contribute to victim’s medical bills

July 14, 2013
Jeffrey Sommerlot, Marshalltown , Times-Republican

Regarding the stories about Sarah McGuire, ("Shattered," July 7 and "Life in the aftermath," July 8) I have a surefire, ingenious solution to a small part of her issues. As I understand, it costs several hundred thousand dollars to keep an inmate in prison each year. This would be in excess of her insurance cost and the Social Security she has been denied. Maybe even in excess of her total medical care. Whatever she needs, deduct from what is allotted for this man's keep. If this means no cable, or even no TV, so be it. If it means he sits in solitary to cut down on guard costs, so be it. If it means he subsists on bread and water, so be it. Could it be any simpler than that?
