DES MOINES - The Marshalltown freshman baseball team made a last-gasp comeback but came up just short of stealing the second game from Des Moines East in the Scarlets' doubleheader sweep on Friday night.

The Scarlets won the first game 22-8 in five innings. East led 10-6 in game two before the Bobcats (7-26) rallied to within a run in the top of the seventh of the second game, losing 10-9.

Des Moines East's last four runs of game two came unearned to reliever Jordan Smiley. Cody Mead got the loss, striking out six and walking six over 4 2/3 innings.

Paden Himes was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs for Marshalltown, while Devan Mann was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and three stolen bases. Smiley went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, yet the Bobcats suffered their sixth straight defeat.

Mason Huntley suffered the pitching loss in the opening game, in which the Scarlets scored 13 times in the first inning. Spencer Dempewolf, Huntley and Himes each went 2-for-3 at the plate. Huntley and Himes both doubled, while Himes and Mead driving in two runs apiece. Mann was 1-for-2 with two runs, an RBI and three more stolen bases.

Marshalltown closes the season with home games Monday against Johnston and Tuesday versus Des Moines Roosevelt.

Scarlets outscore Bobcat sophomores

DES MOINES - A late lead got away from the Marshalltown sophomore baseball team in the second game of a doubleheader at Des Moines East, and the Scarlets scored the sweep on Friday night.

East won the opening game 16-1 in three innings and then took the nightcap 12-11.

The Bobcats led game two 11-5 after the top of the sixth inning before East rallied to tie the score with six runs in the bottom half. The Scarlets tacked on the game-winner in the form of a walk-off home run leading off the seventh.

In the second game, Ben Rebik led MHS going 3-for-3 with two doubles, an RBI and three runs scored. Kyler Ladehoff was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Joe Rebik tripled and drove in three, Jeffrey Miron and Jack Greene both doubled, and Jordan Smith and Brandin Chaloupek added singles. Smith went the distance on the mound, surrendering three home runs in the loss.

Joe Rebik and Peyton Williams had Marshalltown's only hits in the opening game, with Rebik scoring the lone run. Williams was the losing pitcher.

Marshalltown (5-25-1) hosts Johnston on Monday and Des Moines Roosevelt Tuesday to round out the season.
