Larry D. McConnell, 68, of Marshalltown, IA passed away Saturday, July 20, 2013 at his home.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at the Main St. Chapel of the Anderson Funeral Homes, in Marshalltown. A celebration of life will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial with Military Honors will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens, in Marshalltown. A memorial has been established in Larry's name. Larry was born June 14, 1945 in Marshalltown, IA to Forrest and Roseva (White) McConnell. He attended school in LaMoille, Beaman and Gladbrook. After school he joined the United States Air Force and proudly served for four years. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Klar in 1966. They soon had a daughter, Kara McConnell. He later married Nancy Ferry on December 23, 1996. Larry was employed at Lennox Industries, in Marshalltown in 1969. He retired as a Production Supervisor in 2004. He farmed organically for several years, raising blue corn and soybeans. He also raised black angus cattle. He loved working on his farm and taking care of his cattle. He loved building things (he built most of his house) and engineering new and easier ways of doing things. He was an excellent mechanic and enjoyed restoring and working on his older John Deere tractors and machinery. He also loved playing pool and cards. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandsons. His best friend and protector was Rambo, his loyal Rottweiler.
He will be missed by his wife, Nancy McConnell of Marshalltown, IA; his daughter, Kara (Curt) Close of Ankeny, IA; his grandsons, Kaden and Cord Close; his sisters, Mary (Jim) Albright of Pembroke Pines, Fl, Kay McConnell of Marshalltown, IA and June (Bill) Close of Marshalltown, IA; his nephew, Jeff Hammer in the Cedar Rapids, IA area; his niece, Jennifer Hammer of Florida and his faithful guard dog, Rambo. He was preceded in death by his father, Forrest McConnell; his mother, Roseva Ayers; his step-mother, Dorothy McConnell; his brother, Jerry Ayers.
