Marshalltown resident Dean Welton is in the middle of a fight against lung cancer, but his family and friends are standing firm in his corner.
They are organizing a dinner benefit for the 69-year-old from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the UAW Hall at 411 W. Iowa Ave.
Money raised will go to help with medical and travel expense as Welton goes through chemotherapy and radiation with his wife Anna by his side.
"We think this is a great way to support him and help him fight cancer," said Arriel Roe, Welton's niece and one of the organizers of the benefit. "Dean is the type of guy that has always been there for everyone and will drop anything he is doing to help someone. This is our chance as a family to stand beside Dean and fight strong to beat this cancer."
According to Roe, dealing with cancer has been a roller coaster ride for Welton.
"Some days are good and some days are bad," she said.
