Joe Diffie, the country musician whose past hits include "Third Rock from the Sun" and "Pickup Man," will perform in Marshalltown next month.
Diffie will hit the stage as part of the Saturday night of Oktemberfest Sept. 28 in the new parking lot west of Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
"This is a great opportunity that we have to bring him to town," said Zach Wahl, president of the Oktemberfest board. "We looked at what people wanted in the community and they wanted us to bring a big country act into town."
Diffie will perform from 6:30 to 8 p.m. He will be followed by a free concert indoors at the Coliseum from 8 p.m. to midnight by the band Lonesome Road.
Tickets are now available for the Diffie show for $10 at: Denny's Hometown Appliance Center, Fareway, Hy-Vee, Jiffy Convenience Store, McAtee Tire & Service and United Bank and Trust. Tickets will be $15 at the gate the night of the show.
Dan Moellers, of the Oktemberfest board who is organizing the concert, said there will be room for approximately 3,000 people to catch the Diffie show as they fence off a portion of First Street near the parking lot.
"We're excited about bringing a big name like Joe Diffie," Moellers said. "Country music is very popular in town."
There will be a beverage garden outside and food available in the coliseum that night.
Wahl said overall plans are going well for the annual Marshalltown festival which will run from Sept. 26 to 29. He said people can expect the annual favorites such as the kids night, car show, parade and spaghetti supper.
"It will be another great fall festival," Wahl said.
A special event this year will be a 60th anniversary celebration for JBS during the car show Sept. 27. JBS, and its affiliated union, will take donations for pork on a stick products that will benefit the Project Lead the Way program at Marshalltown High School.
