IOWA CITY - University of Iowa junior men's basketball player Darius Stokes has been awarded a scholarship by coach Fran McCaffery.
Stokes, the son of former Hawkeye all-Big Ten performer Greg Stokes, has been a walk-on the past three seasons. The Cedar Rapids native and Linn-Mar graduate has played in 12 games each of the past two seasons, scoring no more than 2 points in any game.
"Darius is an incredibly hard worker who brings energy and enthusiasm on a daily basis," said McCaffery. "It's rewarding to see his growth and improvement since his freshman year. Darius is a valuable member of this team and has earned this scholarship."
Stokes was an honorable mention all-Mississippi Valley Conference player his senior season at Linn-Mar. His sister Kiah is a junior on the Connecticut women's basketball team.
"This is a dream come true," Darius Stokes said. "I am extremely grateful for this opportunity. Coach McCaffery has always believed in me and pushed me in every practice. Having the opportunity to be part of this team as a walk-on and now earning a scholarship after working hard every day is an amazing feeling.
"There's no other place I would rather be. We have a tremendous coaching staff and I have the best teammates that anybody could ask for. I look foward to continued improvement and the challenges ahead."
Iowa now has 13 scholarship players on its roster for 2013-14.
