Jim Lowrance, group president of Great Western Bank, has filed papers to be a candidate for mayor.
Lowrance is extensively involved in the community having served on the boards of Marshall Economic and Development Impact Committee (MEDIC), Iowa River Hospice, United Way, Big Brothers & Big Sisters and the House of Compassion.
Last year, Lowrance was named Citizen of the Year by the Morning Optimist Club of Marshalltown.
He was unavailable for comment at press time.
The announcement of candidacy was made by the city clerk on Friday.
Al Hoop, current 4th Ward city council member, turned in nomination papers for the mayoral race last week.
Current Mayor Tommy Thompson will not seek re-election. Thompson was appointed interim mayor in September 2012, after the death of Mayor Gene Beach. Last fall, Thompson was one of four candidates on the mayoral ballot and captured more than 60 percent of votes. Thompson previously served as mayor from 1991 to 1997.
The deadline for filing papers to be a candidate in the city election is Sept. 19.
