FAMILY LIFE

Family: My family includes my amazing wife, Lauren (nee Hankins); my parents, Terry and Caryl Borcherding, my older brother, Brett Borcherding, and my in-laws, Greg and Jan Hankins. We also have several brothers- and sisters-in-law, and seven nieces and nephews.

Pets: Lenny, the bearded dragon, three goldfish and one beta fish.

Hobbies and interests: Boating, family, fishing, hunting, traveling and sports.

WORK

Occupation: I have completed my internship as a funeral director and embalmer at Mitchell Family Funeral Home and applied to the state of Iowa for my license. I will become a licensed funeral director effective Sept. 21.

What that means: I help families on a day to day basis with one of the most difficult times in their lives: losing a loved one. I am present throughout the whole process to reflect on the memory of those individuals who have passed

Tenure: I previously worked at a Waterloo funeral home four years while attending college at the University of Northern Iowa followed by mortuary school in Des Moines. I have worked at Mitchell Family Funeral Home since September 2013.

Best part of job: Working with the public and helping families during difficult times in their lives.

If I could change jobs I would be/do: A marine biologist. I have always had a passion for animals, but especially whales and dolphins.

FAVORITES

Movies: "Pirates of the Caribbean" trilogy, "Lord of the Rings" trilogy and the "Dark Knight" trilogy.

Foods: Most kinds of pizza.

Sports: Minnesota Vikings, Twins, Timberwolves and Wild. Anything that has to do with Minnesota.

COMMUNITY

Best part of living here: Lauren and I have truly enjoyed the people in the Marshalltown area.

Most influential people: My parents, my wife, my funeral directing mentors here in Marshalltown, including: Marty Mitchell, Mark Bethel and Mike Kirk; and back in my hometown: Louie Hagarty and Rich Schoof.

Local involvement: Trinity Lutheran Church and Marshalltown YMCA-YWCA.

Advice on life: Live everyday like it could be your last.
